Scenic Sunday

Our next hike will be on the historic Scenic Drive.  This Sunday, May 29th, Scenic Drive will be closed from 8:00am to 11:00am to vehicular traffic.  Bring your roller blades, bicycles, baby buggies, or your favorite well worn dusty hiking boots, and join hundreds of your fellow El Pasoans this Sunday and hike across Scenic Drive.  This trail is rated easy to moderate.

The next Back By Noon Hike will be June 5th.  Busy on weekends but still love to get out and hike?  Check out the schedule at El Paso Naturally.  They have weekly sunrise hikes.

National Trails Day

Saturday, June 5th is National Trails Day, and we will have an easy hike on the Pine Tree Trail in Aguirre Springs.  After the hike we will have a picnic, so bring your favorite picnic food and beverages.

Study: Many Sunscreens May Be Accelerating Cancer

The white goop, creams and ointments might prevent sunburn. But don't count on them to keep the ultraviolet light from destroying your skin cells and causing tumors and lesions.  Read the full story here.

WASHINGTON (May 24) -- Almost half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A or its derivatives, according to an evaluation of those products released today. AOL News also has learned through documents and interviews that the Food and Drug Administration has known of the potential danger for as long as a decade without alerting the public, which the FDA denies.

The best sunscreens are wide brim hats, long sleeve shirts and trousers.  However, if you must use the sunscreen goop, then please reference this list for the best sunscreen products.  And here is a list of sunscreens that are not recommended.

Upcoming Adventures

Adventure. Do you actually remember the word? When was the last time you went out for a real adventure? Well, you might consider your everyday life in this concrete jungle as one big adventure, and, in a way, it is. But, climbing the stairs to your office on the fifth floor doesn't really count as an adventure. Nor does a computer mouse and dust bunnies qualify as wildlife. Standing under the shower is not as exhilarating as standing under a waterfall, and standing on your balcony overlooking the city is not quite the same as standing on top of a mountain ridge overlooking the valley below. So dust off your boots, grab your water bottle, and join us for a hike. This area has a lot of adventure waiting just for you.

Here are the proposed ADVENTURES for April and May. Please keep in mind that this schedule is not engraved in stone, and is subject to change. Remember, the only thing in life that is constant, is change.

  • April 10 Guadalupe Peak
  • April 11 B-24 crash site
  • April 17 South Mount Franklin
  • April 24  Carlsbad Caverns and Desert Botanical
