Get your camping gear ready, and make plans to escape the desert heat and spend the weekend at Sleepy Grass Camp ground located in the cool mountains near Cloudcroft, NM.
The campground is located in an open meadow with views of the surrounding mountains and cradled between Douglas fir, Ponderosa and Aspen-covered mountain sides. This is a very pretty, rustic campground with an abundance of walk-in tent sites and RV sites.
This is also an excellent day trip for those of you that have become weary of the desert heat and are seeking an escape. Cloudcroft has several craft and variety shops to include a miniature golf course.
We will take a tour Sunspot Observatory and museum. Sunspot is at the end of the 16-mile Sunspot Highway or Scenic Byway. This is a free self-guided tour of the various observatories and watch the scientists at work. The museum has an entry fee.
The Sacromental Mountains Museum and Pioneer Village is also located in Cloudcroft. See exhaustive exhibits of the history of Cloudcroft. Imagine the growth of the Village as you view models of the little "impossible" railroad and panoramic photographs of the old Lodge and other significant landmarks. Stroll through the Pioneer Village and learn about the early farming and ranching industry and life ways in a rugged log cabin. There is a $5.00 per adult fee for this museum.
